Why European Portuguese and not Brazilian
This is a common question. The short answer: if you are in Johannesburg and you want a Portuguese passport, studying for the CIPLE exam with European Portuguese materials and teachers makes all the difference.
The CIPLE uses recordings and texts in European Portuguese. The pronunciation, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions are all European. Arriving at the exam with Brazilian habits creates an unnecessary adjustment. At Language Lady, we teach European Portuguese from the very first lesson.
What to expect in your first few weeks
In the first sessions, the focus is on building confidence and useful, everyday vocabulary: greetings, introductions, shopping situations, getting around, family. The goal is for you to communicate in real situations as quickly as possible, even while you are still making mistakes.
As you progress, we work through grammar step by step: the most common verb tenses, agreement, and the placement of the clitic pronouns that set European Portuguese apart from Brazilian. For example, in European Portuguese we say dá-me o livro (“give me the book”), with the pronoun after the verb. The materials are authentic: recordings from Portuguese radio, film clips, newspaper articles.
